D- to D+

Extract limited relevant information and requires guided assistance to answer the research questions. Write notes that are messy, disorganized and are copied word-for-word from the source. Recognize the importance of citing sources, but require ongoing monitoring to ensure the origins of the information are referenced. Include some sources with guided assistance. Require prompting to draw any conclusions. Information is just restated. There is no student voice evident. Use a single source.

C- to C+

Extract a lot of information that is not relevant and makes answering the research question(s) challenging. Write notes lacking organization and are often copied word-for-word from source. Locate sources at the end of the project or identified task and inconsistently reference the origin of the information. Include some sources used, but information is missing or incorrectly formatted. Draw weak conclusions that are not backed up by their research. Voice of the student is only sometimes evident. Organize sources based upon the recommendations of others.

B- to B+

Identify mostly appropriate and quality sources in a variety of media and print formats for an identified tasks or project. Make a determination of the source based on prior knowledge or ask questions to clarify the reliability. Identify relevant components of the information that can be further organized when using the information as part of a task. Extract mostly relevant information which answers most of the research questions. Write notes which are mostly organized and written in the student’s own words. Adopt a system for organizing sources for the duration of the project or identified task. Use the correct format to cite their sources. Attempt to draw conclusions from their research. Voice of the student is evident in parts. Organize from several sources.

A- to A

Use a range of strategies to independently identify and clearly articulate what is required of an informational problem. Ask probing questions to broaden the scope of the task leading to deeper understanding as well as offer more than one way to deconstruct it into component parts and smaller details. Develop action plans to guide themselves through the relevant steps in the research process to achieve their task. Assess the validity of a diverse range of sources that address all components of the research questions. Identify highly appropriate and quality sources in a variety of media and formats and can anticipate what information they expect to find in a source. Review the source of the information and able to determine individual and broader levels of reliability for current and future tasks. Identify the information within a source and differentiate between what is important, what is interesting, and what is irrelevant. Extract relevant information which answers all of the research questions. Keep well organized succinct notes written in own words Systematically maintain ongoing records of sources for the current and future task.
